Japanese Food

Japanese food generally means traditional style Japanese food called "Washoku".  Japanese food has evolved over years going thorough lots of cultural and social changes.  After the end of Edo Period with opening Japan to outside world, some western culture was introduced to traditional Japanese food.  Using fresh food in the particular season and how they are displayed on dishes are very important in Japanese food.  Many foreigners eating Japanese kaiseki ryori (traditional Japanese course cuisine) for the first time are impressed with the quality of food with fresh ingredients, but also artistic presentation of food.

Japanese food usually comes with staple food, usually rice with miso (soy bean paste) soup and main and some side dishes.  Main dishes can be made from cooked meat (beef, pork and chicken), fish (raw, grilled, boiled or deep fried) and vegetables (raw, steamed or deep fried).  The unique aspect of Japanese food is raw fish and sushi is the most famous Japanese food.  You may see a lots of sushi restaurants outside of Japan as sushi is very popular for its delicious tastes as well as healthy image of the food.  It takes almost 10 years for sushi chef to make sushi in front of customer in Japan, but some sushi restaurants outside of Japan have new sushi chef make sushi after a few weeks of training.  I met sushi chef in his 20's in the US and he was driving Mercedes!   He was not even an owner of the restaurant and one of the chef, but still making pretty good money. There may be greater opportunities for Japanese chef to go abroad facing increasing demands of Japanese food in foreign countries.
