Sapporo Travel Guide

Sapporo is the capital and biggest city of the northernmost island of Hokkaido with a population of approximately 2 million. Sapporo is a main transportation hub for other tourist spots of Hokkaido.

Getting in

All international direct flights and many domestic flights from other major international airports like Narita and Kansai lands at the New Chitose Airport located close to the city of Sapporo. 

You can take Skybus, a door to door express shuttle bus at the flat rate of ¥4,000 (¥1,000 for each additional passenger), JR trains that goes to Sapporo station for around ¥1,000 or taxi to get to your hotels.  It take about 40 minutes to get into the city by trains and it is the most economical means of transportation unless you are very tired from the long flights or carry heavy suitcases to get to your hotel.

Sightseeing

Odori Park; Sapporo's most famous park extending 12 blocks from the Sapporo TV tower to 12th street. It is located at the center of the city and you can easily walk to the park from many of the nearby hotels.  Odorik park is regarded as a symbol of Sapporo City.  During the summer, the park is filled with beautiful flowers and trees and it is the perfect spot to take a nap on the greenly grass. you can also enjoy some street performers playing music and dancing.  Odori Park is one of the most popular dating spot so you may want to take your partners and take a breathing of Sapporo city.  Best of all, it is all free!  

Susukino; Biggest nightlife districts in Hokkaido located at the souther part of Sapporo City.  You can take a taxi or take a Namboku subway line and get off at the Susukino station.  There will be lost of restaurants and bars in Susukino, but the place is more famous for men's paradise so make sure you don't gaze at a bunch of sexy ladies on the streets when walking with your wife or girlfriends.

Sapporo Snow Festival; Held on the first week of February every year and it is  Sapporo's biggest event that attracts a lot of tourist from other parts of Japan and overseas. Odori park becomes a fantasy of snow world filled with pure white handmade snow statues, transparent ice sculptures and huge amazing snow sculptures in line that lasts more than 1.5km. Make sure to book your hotels during this major event and enjoy the sculpture competition of the biggest and most elaborate artworks from snow and ice. If you want to become a romantic mood with your partner, go to this festival at night as the amazing sculpture lighted up will make you as pure as you can get. 

Other Nearby Destinations

Otaru-  Famous tourist spot for good seafood and a lot of attractive places such as Otaru canal. It takes approximately one hour by car from Sapporo. 

Niseko - Famous resorts for powder skiing and snowboarding. Mt. Annupuri is the largest ski ground in Niseko area with 31 varieties of ski-courses. Surprising you don't feel like you are in Japan at Niseko as it attracts many foreign skier and snowboarders from all over the world.  Some of the hotels in Niseko are actually owned by foreigners. It takes approximately two hours by bus from Sapporo.

Lake Toya - Became famous when the G8 summit was held at Lake Toya in July, 2008.  The grand view of lake and surrounding nature from your hotel is amazing.  It takes approximately two and a half hours by car from Sapporo.
