Kyoto Travel Guide

Kyoto is the capital city of Kyoto Prefecture and major part of Kansai area with a population of approximately 1.5 million.  Kyoto used to be the imperial capital of Japan and there still exist many historical shrines and temples that attract many tourist from all over the world.

Getting in

There is no airport in Kyoto so many foreign tourists land in Kansai International Airport in Osaka and take JR Haruka Express to go to Kyoto.  It takes about 70 minutes from Kansai International Airport to Kyoto station.  For those who arrive at Narita International Airport, it takes about 2 1/2 hours by JR Shinkansen (bullet train) from Tokyo to Kyoto. There is a big shopping mall, hotels and movie theater in Kyoto station.  Kyoto station is pretty much the same as other urban station like Tokyo station. Most traveler expect Kyoto to be a traditional place, however the gateway of Kyoto is very modern and westernized on the contrary to traditional image of Kyoto City.

Kinaku-ji; Buddhist temple known as Golden Pavilion Temple and two stories of the temple are covered by real gold.  The original temple was constructed in late 1300's. The formal name of the temple is Rokuon temple which are surrounded by beautiful Japanese garden and pond.  Together with Ginkaku-ji or Silver Pavilion Temple, Kinkaku-ji attracts many foreign tourist for its magnificent view.  My grandma loves this place!
